I made a post few months back saying that I need to build myself a firewall/proxy server (preferably Squid) for Innerchild - our small LAN/Internet shop.
Why? Some kids accidentally browse sites that is not intended to be seen by them. Not sure, if it’s from some pop-up advertisement or intentional, but I intend to block them out either way.

I have 3 days to clean up these virus outbreak we’re experiencing right now at this puny internet/LAN shop that we have.
Background
Last time, tried installing a fresh copy of Windows XP on a clean drive, installed Grisoft’s AVG Free antivirus and (slaved) scanned an infected disk from one of the computer. AVG says it’s infected with the Brontok.L worm.
The antivirus apparently ‘healed’ the worm, but a day after (or probably a few hours after), those pesky EXE files are back!
The Plan B
Well, there is no plan B… What I just did was perform and online scan on Housecall and downloaded Trend Micro’s PC Cillin Internet Security 2007.
During PC Cillin’s installation, it refuses to continue until AVG is removed from the system. Installer said that it’s not compatible with AVG (come on, talk about competition). So, AVG was removed and installation continues. After the registration, it started downloading update and immediately found the Rontkbr.Gen worm infecting a few many files.
Apparently, Brontok is Rontkbr.Gen for PC Cillin.
What now?
Well, I’m installing the free 30-day trial of PC Cillin on 3 computers including the timer/server. Still currently downloading. The result so far looks promosing. Let’s see what happens next…
It’s 10:31pm.. and it’s going to be a pretty long night….

Last Saturday, all computers in our internet shop, Innerchild, were infected by some virus. I know this for a fact since the server / timer computer keeps on rebooting. Shame on me for not installing an antivirus!
Later that night, I found out that the virus (errr… worm) was Brontok.l

I was actually going to write ‘In Need of a New Phone’, but no. I no longer need a phone. Feels like a cellphone is too limiting. Apparenty, I can no longer live in SMS and voice call alone.
4 year old XDA 2? Badly needs a replacement.
I just had it repaired (again). It costs me P200 for the soldering. The problem then is it wont charge the battery. No connection to its cradle. But there are other problems too.
First, it’s sssslllooowww… probably my it’s because of the QTEK ROM I installed few months back.
Second, the casing’s all messed up. It doesn’t have the black black cover anymore. Matthew ate it. :) well, not exactly ate it, but you know what I mean..
Third, scratches.
Forth, there’s lots of cool new smart phones out there. :) … sorry, no Nokia candidates on my list.

This tutorial is from Matt Cutts himself found here. It’s unfortunate though that the tutorial presented there are for GIMP Ver. 054. Pretty old version. This little tutorial is a little more up to date using the latest version. As of this writing it’s Ver. 2.2.17
A little Intro
GIMP stands for GNU Image Manipulation Program. Like any other Open Source application, GIMP is a free. It is robust, powerful program for painting, image processing, and manipulating pictures.
It tries to complete with Adobe’s Photoshop in very obvious functions. If you enjoy using Adobe’s Photoshop ® program you’ll love the GIMP. The GIMP is a project of Spencer Kimball and Peter Mattis at the University of California, Berkeley.
The Tutorial
Alright, let’s get into it. We will be needing a sample image.

Found this little article from Ebay while looking (just looking) for a $500 laptop that can complete with a $1,200 laptop - HP Pavillion DV2550SE. Hope this helps someone out there.
AMD and Intel make several processors typically found in laptops. Some optimize laptop battery life while others concentrate on performance. Mobile processors, indicated by the word “Mobile” or just “M,” need less power and generate less heat than processors designed for desktops.
Unless you need a powerful desktop replacement, get a mobile processor to extend battery life and prevent overheating.
- Celeron: Intel’s budget-oriented chip with speeds up to 2.5GHz. They run slightly slower than Pentiums but not as slow as pentium-M!
- Celeron-M:This low-cost processor has speeds up to 1.5GHz.People looking to email, surf the Internet, and use word processing applications will be fine with the Celeron-M. It replaced the Pentium III-M in the low-end laptop processor arena.

The My Documents folder is your own personal folder in which you can store your documents, graphics, and other personal files. When there is more that one person using the computer, Windows creates a My Documents folder for each user on the computer.
Below is the steps on changing the default location of the ‘My Documents’ folder
Why would I want to do that?
I will do t his to all the computers in our LAN slash computer shop (InnerChild). The server (the PC with the Timer, scanner and printer attached) has its drive D shared to all 10 computers. Drive D contains all the game installers and other stuff. This shared drive is mapped (as Drive Z) on all workstation in the network.
The printer is shared amongst all the workstations. I have all computers on the network use that shared printer. Aside from that I’m thinking of setting the default My Documents folder for all the PC to their Drive Z, so they all can print on the server.

What you don’t know yet? It’s all over the internet buddy! I first read it on Selapna’s blog and found out that one of the hackers who was able to free up the iphone and made it available to every sim card is George Hotz, a 17-year old kid!
Geez, kids are getting smart nowadays!
Check out Marhgil Macuha’s blog for the website of those genius hackers!
Alright, now since we can use our own Smart or Globe (ok sure, Sun too) sim on an iPhone, all we need to do now is wait for the price drop! :)

Yesterday we bought an Epson Stylus C79 printer for photo/text printing. This will be exclusively used by Innerchild computer systems.
Buying a colored printer has always been in the agenda of discussion between me and my brother - that is, whether to buy and inkjet or refill (or buy) a toner for the laserjet printer we already have.
Even when our HP Laserjet 1020 printer was still being used for the shop, I was mentioning to my business partner to go for the ink printer when the toner ran out. Having an ink jet means additional business. We could add photo printing, invitation and other customer color printing requirements.
He gave in eventually hence the new printer. But I do agree on his point, expensive sh*t. We could have scour the metro and did a market research for a good deal… Hey, what can I do, impulsive buyer here.

If I haven’t mentioned yet, my desktop PC at home was fried! It literally smoked and had some liquid popping near the power cable that connects to the mother board! Bummer!
So now, I am in the market of getting a new (clone) PC. Yesterday, mom and I tried getting one, but she got a herself a new TV/cellphone and me, I just got a Canon DC22 from Ebay. Still, no computer.
But when I do able to get one, I will definitely put Linux in it! Not sure which flavor though.
How about Lois you might ask. She’s not familiar with Linux! I say, that’s ok. It will run Windows Vista or XP inside Linux!

It’s an HP Pavillion DV2550se! It’s small, but loaded with powerful features. This notebook features a compact but brilliant 14.1″ widescreen display, Intel Core 2 Duo processing and 2GB while weighing in at just over 2 kilograms.
He showed the pics to me a few minutes ago after having a small chit-chat and updating some news about the house and nanay. Last time we chat, a few night ago, he did mentioned that he will buy one but I have doubts he would being a future daddy himself. :)Well, we did buy it. He like it so much that he even urged me to buy one myself. Maybe I would, maybe not. I don’t have the dough bro. :)
Here’s the feature of that one sleek, cool laptop:
Processor Type
Intel Core 2 Duo T5250
Screen Size
14.1 in
RAM (Preloaded / Maximum)
2048MB DDR2
Hard Drive
160GB SATA 5400RPM

8X Super Multi LightScribe DL DVD+/-RW

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100

I’m still canvassing for a decent desktop here but I did asked him to find me a cheap $500 laptop (I could pour in a little blog money there can’t I?)

I am so loving this PortableApp! I can’t believe I’m bringing all my apps with me!
Whether I’m at home or at the office, or even in some internet cafe in some mall, I can read my subscribed RSS feed (I use thunderbird btw), use firefox and use GIMP if ever I need to edit a picture to be placed on a blog. I tell you, not all PC I use have Photoshop in it. Portable Gimp really comes in handy.
Haven’t really explored everything else yet or installed every application (cause there’s a lot!). I did try, as I mentioned, Thunderbird, Firefox, and Gimp. There’s also Nvu (an web page editor, much like Dreamweaver or Frontpage) and a plan to install the compact version of Apache, Mysql, PHP collectively as XAMP.
Having all these apps, I feel like there’s a mobile server on my pocket.
